NEW YORK – Even with Ivy League matches still almost two months away, the women's tennis team will get a taste of the league this weekend at the ECAC Indoor Championships.
Cornell has been seeded fourth in this year's event, which is being hosted by Columbia at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center. The Big Red will face fifth-seeded Brown at 3 p.m. Friday in a quarterfinal match.
If the Big Red wins its opener, it will take on top-seeded Yale, which is ranked 32
nd in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, in a 5 p.m. Saturday semifinal. If Brown wins Friday's match, Cornell will take on eighth-seeded Long Island University-Brooklyn at 11 a.m. Saturday in the consolation semifinals.
Six of the eight teams in the three-day event are from the Ancient Eight, meaning Cornell (2-0) could see another Ivy League opponent in Sunday's final day of play The Big Red will look to improve upon its seventh-place finish in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 events. The 2013 tournament was canceled due to inclement weather.
Cornell enters the weekend on a 14-match nonleague winning streak dating back to the 2011-12 season. The Big Red opened dual match play last weekend with victories over Buffalo and Maryland-Baltimore County at Reis Tennis Center.
