FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Cornell softball team opened day one of the 2014 season with a split, winning its season opener against the host George Mason Patriots 4-2 before dropping the nightcap 9-5 to Army at the 2014 Patriot Classic.
Senior
Christina Villalon opened her final season by going 5-for-7 in the team's first two games, while senior hurler
Sammy Roth picked up a complete game victory in the circle in game one.
Game 1
Roth scattered just five hits in a complete game shutout, stranding six baserunners to move to 1-0 on the season. Cornell built a 3-0 lead after two and a half innings and won its season opener for the seventh time in the last eight seasons.
Cornell recorded eight hits in its first time outdoors, with
Christina Villalon going 2-for-3 and reaching after being hit by a pitch.
Meg Parker (1-for-2 with a walk),
Sophie Giaquinto (1-for-3 with a walk) and
Leanne Iannucci (1-for-2 with a walk) each reached base twice, with Parker adding two runs scored and an RBI. Giaquinto, Iannucci and
Linda Laeufer each drove in a run as well.
The Big Red got on the board in the first on an RBI double down the rightfield line to score Parker, who picked up a two-out walk and advanced into scoring position on a Villalon single. Cornell then added two in the third with a Laeufer sacrifice fly and a Iannucci RBI single up the middle to plate Villalon.
The Patriots cut the lead to 3-1, but Cornell added an insurance run in the fourth when Parker's fly to center scored
Lauren Bucolo, who led off the inning with a single and stolen base.
Mason went quietly in the sixth and seventh innings, but only after Roth shut the door on a GMU rally in the fifth. The senior stranded three runners after the home team got within two, inducing a bases loaded groundout to preserve the lead.
Game 2
Army raced out to a 6-0 lead after four innings and Cornell's late rally fell short in a 9-5 decision. Villalon stayed hot in game two with a 3-for-4 effort with a double, but the Black Knights collected 11 hits and stole six bases to manufacture runs off sophomore
Meg Parker, who went the distance in the circle.
Sam Creamer was 2-for-3, while
Chloe Pendergast had a two-run double in the fifth to get the Big Red on the board.
