ITHACA, N.Y. -- As the countdown to regionals and nationals continues, the Cornell men's and women's polo teams kept their momentum with a weekend home sweep. The men knocked off the Maryland Polo Club on Friday evening, while the women topped Garrison Forest 24-6 on Saturday night at Oxley Equestrian Center.
Maryland has given the Big Red men problems in the past and looked to be a challenge once again. Nick Stieg,
Nik Feldman and Ignacio Masias played together for the first time all semester. Cornell showed they were serious by jumping out to a commanding 7-0 lead after one chukker. Maryland recovered in the second and challenged the Big Red by holding them to the same lead as after one and going into the half at 11-4 Cornell. Maryland hung tough in the third once again but Cornell squeaked out to a 15-7 lead heading into the fourth. Cornell managed its third straight chukker of four goals and brought home the win at 19-9. It was important for the Big Red to finally have their three starters play together and the hopes are that they will remain together for the remainder of the season. Feldman tallied nine, Stieg had six and Masias scored four.
For the women on Saturday,
Anna Winslow,
Kailey Eldredge and
Devin Cox took on a squad from the Garrison Forest Polo. Garrison scored first, but the Big Red answered with three goals to help secure a 5-2 lead after one. Cornell kept up the offensive pressure in the second and put the defensive clamp on its opponent as its moved into the half up 10-3. The third saw Cornell blow the game open by outscoring Garrison 8-1 in the chukker. Heading into the fourth with a commanding lead of 18-4, the Big Red cruised home with the 24-6 win. Cox and Eldredge scored eight each with Winslow putting up six and two goals going to the ponies.
