Big Red Softball Ends 3-1 Weekend With Split on Sunday

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell softball team ended the Delaware Invitational with a 3-1 record after splitting a Sunday doubleheader at t he UD Softball Complex. The Big Red rallied for a 3-2 win over Robert Morris to begin the day before falling to St. John's 4-0.

Cornell rallied for three runs in the sixth inning and senior Alyson Onyon put together the Big Red's third straight outstanding effort in the circle in a 3-2 win over Robert Morris.

Onyon scattered seven hits and didn't allow an earned run in extending the Big Red's win streak to three games. She struck out three to pick up her first win of the season with a third complete game effort in four starts.

Robert Morris struck first by taking advantage of a pair of two-out errors, including a relay throwing error to plate a run. Cornell was mostly silent over the first five innings, only picking up its first hit two batters into the fifth inning before breaking through an inning later.

Cornell strung together three singles by its first four batters to tie the score on a Chloe Pendergast hit to left. Two batters later, Linda Laeufer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give Cornell a lead, and Emily Weinberg walked to drive in another. RMU was able to get one run back after a two-out error was followed by a double, but Onyon retired the final hitter to clinch the victory.

St. John's was able to quiet the Big Red bats in the nightcap as Cornell collected just three hits, all coming in the final two innings, in a 4-0 shutout loss.

Sam Creamer broke up the no hitter in the sixth inning and doubled with a runner on in the seventh to put runners on second and third with one out, but the Red Storm's Ashley Beza was able to shut the door with a pair of flyouts.

Meg Parker took a hard-luck loss, allowing three runs in five innings before Sammy Roth pitched the final two innings, giving up three hits and one run. Sophie Giaquinto had the only other hit for the Big Red.
