Softball Splits For Second Straight Day In Virginia

FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Cornell softball team split a pair of five inning games on Sunday afternoon at George Mason's Patriot Classic, falling to Army 10-1 before winning a rain-shortened 4-3 decision over the host school in the nightcap. The Big Red ended its first weekend on the diamond with a 2-2 record.

Game 1
Army scored at least two runs in every inning, including four in the second, to complete the weekend sweep of the Big Red with a 10-1 victory.

Leanne Iannucci hit her first home run of the season to put Cornell's lone run on the board with a solo shot in the fifth. Linda Laeufer, Lauren Bucolo and Jessica Bigbie also had hits, with Bigbie's going for a double.

The Black Knights pounded out 13 hits against Big Red pitching, 11 of them singles.

Game 2
Cornell took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two, then plated the go-ahead score in the bottom of the fifth inning to claim the victory. The Patriots had tied the game in the top of the sixth with one out before the game was called and the score reverted to the last inning played.

The game-winning run came on a Leanne Iannucci sacrifice fly that scored freshman Jessica Bigbie with two outs.

Cornell's three first inning runs came after four straight singles, including a two-run shot to right by Bigbie. THe Big Red scored its third run on a groundout by Jenny Edwards.

Meg Parker surrendered just two hits in her 5.0 inning outing, allowing two earned runs and four walks while striking out three to pick up her first win of the season.

Bigbie ended the second contest 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while four other players also recorded hits.
