MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The women's tennis team hits the road for a nonleague match at 2 p.m. Saturday against West Virginia.
Cornell is 3-3, having broken a three-match losing streak with a 5-2 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday at Reis Tennis Center. Freshman
Alexandra D'Ascenzo leads the team with a 5-1 record in singles, competing at the No. 3 position behind sophomore
Dena Tanenbaum (No. 1) and freshman
Marika Cusick (No. 2). D'Ascenzo is also 5-1 in doubles, typically paired with Cusick.
West Virginia is 2-7, on a two-match losing streak following setbacks to Buffalo on Feb. 22 and Penn State on Sunday. The Mountaineers' two victories have come against California (Pa.) and College of Charleston. Kaja Mrgole (5-3) and Oana Manole (5-2) are the only members of the team with winning records in singles, typically competing from the top of the lineup. They have also paired up to post a 4-2 record from the No. 1 position in doubles.
The Big Red and Mountaineers have met just twice before, with both matches decided by one point. West Virginia won the first meeting, 4-3, in Spring 1995, then Cornell won a 5-4 affair in Fall 1997.
