FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Cornell softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday afternoon at George Mason's Patriot Classic, falling to Monmouth 5-4 in game one, then losing an 8-2 decision in game two. The losses dropped Cornell's record to 2-5 on the season with games set for tomorrow against the same two opponents.

Game One (Box Score - PDF)
For the second game in less than 24 hours, a late Cornell rally fell just short.

Trailing 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, senior Jenny Edwards hit her second home run in as many days to lead off the frame, but that was all that Breanna Sniffen would allow as she shut the door for her second win of the season. Sniffen allowed just three hits and the one run in the final five innings of the contest.

Chloe Pendergast was 2-for-3 with a double, her first career home run and three RBI, to lead the Big Red. Meg Parker reached base twice on a double and a walk and Alyson Onyon went the distance in the circle, allowing just two earned runs in picking up the hard luck loss.

Monmouth scored three in the second, but Cornell answered back with three of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie it on Pendergast's three-run blast. The Hawks tripled, doubled and singled their way to two runs in the fifth for the go-ahead scores and held on late despite Edwards' home run.

Game Two (Box Score - PDF)
Cornell took a 2-0 lead early, but a pair of three-run innings sent the Big Red to its third straight loss, 8-2, against George Mason in the evening game of the Patriot Classic.

Freshman Jessica Bigbie went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the first inning and JJ Briggs also had a run-scoring single, hers coming in the second.

Thone lone hit for the Big Red over the final five innings was a harmless two out double by Bigbie in the sixth.
