MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Cornell women's tennis team won its second straight contest with a 5-2 win over West Virginia on Saturday afternoon at the Ridgeview Racquet Club. The Big Red improved to 4-3 and the Mountaineers slipped to 2-8.
Cornell got halfway to the doubles point with a forfeit at number three and clinched the point when
Alexandra D'Ascenzo and
Marika Cusick earned a solid 8-3 victory over the Mountaineers' top double team consisting of Kaja Mrgole and Oana Manole, the squad's top two singles players.
The score was 3-1 after the first rotation around the lineup, as the Big Red earned a forfeit at No. 6 singles and a win by D'Ascenzio at No. 2 in straight sets. Cornell clinched the dual with two matches still on the court when Shannon Comoli topped Irinka Toidze by a 6-1, 6-2 score. Cusick added the margin by rallying from down a set to top Ikttesh Chahal 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-3.
Cornell will attempt to extend its win streak to three when it welcomes Akron to the Reis Tennis center on Saturday, March 15 at 11 a.m.
