CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 18 Big Red women's rowing team defeated No. 14 Radcliffe in the varsity eight race, but could not overcome No. 8 Princeton, as the Tigers earned the Class of '75 Cup this morning on the Charles River.
"The varsity rowed a courageous race," said Hilary Gehman, the Staley Head Coach of Women's Rowing. "They got off the line well against Princeton and Harvard but fell off the pace a bit in the shift to race pace. We were in third, a length down on second place Harvard at the halfway point, but we never gave up. Coxswain
Emma Gelbard called the sprint early and we furiously moved through Harvard in the last 500 to finish in second place. Next weekend we travel to the Clemson Invite where we'll test our speed against teams from all over the country."
"The Ivy League always provides fast racing and an opportunity to test ourselves each weekend," said associate head coach
Liz Dennison. "All the boats took advantage of the opportunity to learn something on the race course today. For example, the A4 had an aggressive, gutsy race, leading off the line in the first part of the race before getting reeled back in. They will look to build off of that in the coming weeks."
The Big Red will travel to the Clemson Invitational next weekend. As part of the weekend's racing, Cornell will take on Penn for the Class of '89 Plate.
