ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman
Marika Cusick won her team-leading 12th singles match of the season under sunny skies at Reis Tennis Center, but it wasn't enough to overcome 58th-ranked Princeton on Friday afternoon in a 6-1 loss.
Cusick won in straight sets at the No. 3 position to improve to 12-4 in dual matches. Unfortunately for Cornell (7-9, 0-6 Ivy), Princeton (17-5, 6-0) had already clinched the match by that point. With the win, the Tigers have clinched at least a share of the Ivy League title.
The Big Red won one of the three doubles matches to start the day. Sophomores
Christy Kung and
Dena Tanenbaum won their match at the No. 2 position, but the Tigers prevailed in the other two tilts to take an early 1-0 lead.
Five of the six singles matches were then decided in straight sets. Just the No. 5 match went to a third-set super tiebreaker, with senior
Shannon Comolli falling just short in a marathon match. Comolli and
Ryann Young, the Big Red's only two seniors, were honored on the team's Senior Day.
The Big Red will wrap up its season at noon Sunday with a match at Penn.
