Softball Drops Doubleheader To Columbia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell softball team dropped an Ivy League doubleheader to Columbia, falling to the Lions 4-3 and 10-4 on Saturday afternoon at Niemand*Robison Field. The Big Red dropped to 14-22 (5-7 Ivy), while the Lions improved to 20-18 (7-7 Ivy).

A four-run third inning was the difference as Columbia held on for a 4-3 game one victory over the Big Red. Cornell had its final scoring opportunity in the fifth with runners on first and second with one out, but the Big Red runners were erased on a double play to end the threat.

Six different Big Red players each had a hit, with Christina Villalon hitting a double and Sophie Giaquinto slamming a solo home run in the second to get the home team on the board.

The Big Red scored two in the third to get back within 4-3 on a Chloe Pendergast RBI groundout and a Jenny Endwards run-scoring single.

Alyson Onyon scattered nine hits and allowed three earned runs in her 13th complete game of the season. With her five strikeouts, the senior moved within 10 of her third straight season with 100 or more.

Alyssa Rodia went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Lions, while Tessa Kroll and Tonia Wu combined on a six-hitter.

The top of Columbia's lineup swamped the Big Red as the Lions swept the Ivy League doubleheader with a 10-4 game two victory. The top five hitters in the lineup combined for 13 hits and seven hitters had multi-hit games as the Lions pounded out 19 hits in the win.

Columbia scored two in the first, one in the second and three in the third to jump out to a 6-0 lead. The Big Red got back within 6-4 heading into the seventh on the strength of a two-run bomb by Taylor Goodin, her first homer of the season. The Lions put the game away with a four-run seventh.

Goodin was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI as the Big Red scratched together nine hits.
