CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 16 Cornell women's rowing team wrapped up the Clemson Invitational with several strong performances, including a victory in its first varsity eight race of the day, crossing the line in front of Louisville, Dartmouth, Duke, Columbia, Iowa and Oklahoma. The varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four each had two sets of races, while Sunday's second session for the second varsity four and the third varsity eight were cancelled due to poor racing conditions.
"We started off the day strong in the first set of races, posting some solid finishes including a win in the varsity eight, said Hilary Gehman, the Staley head coach of women's rowing. "We found the deteriorating conditions to be a limiting factor in the second set of races and were not as competitive as we had hoped."
The varsity four and the second varsity four both took third place in their first race of the day, despite a wiring issue which knocked out the cox box in both races. The varsity four race was particularly competitive with the Big Red coming in just .6 seconds behind second-place Duke.
"Overall, this weekend was a great opportunity for each boat to get in more race experience as we head down the final stretch towards Ivy Championships in May," said associate head coach
