Softball Drops Sunday Twinbill At Princeton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PRINCETON, N.J. – The Cornell softball team closed out its Ivy League road conference schedule on the wrong side of a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Princeton on Sunday afternoon at Class of 1895 Field. The Tigers took 3-2 and 5-2 victories on the day to drop the Big Red to 18-26 (8-10 Ivy) on the season.

Cornell scored two in the first, but the Tigers were able to rally for two in the fourth and plated the go-ahead run in the fifth to take the 3-2 win.

Senior Alyson Onyon took the hard-luck loss in the opener, scattering just five hits and allowing two earned runs in the complete game loss. She struck out two in falling to 11-10 on the year.

Sophomore Michiko McGivney went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles along with an RBI and a run scored. Senior Christina Villalon was 1-for-3 with an RBI single, while Chloe Pendergast also had a single in the loss.

Princeton's Shanna Christian, who took a hard-luck loss of her own on Saturday, gave up just the two runs in the first and shut Cornell out the rest of the way. She surrendered just two hits in the final six innings and four overall to earn the win. Alyssa Schmidt's two-run home run in the fourth tied the contest, and the go-ahead run came on a one-out squeeze bunt by Kate Miller after Marissa Reynolds tripled in the fifth.

Princeton jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings and Cornell could never get back as the Tigers earned the doubleheader sweep with a 5-2 victory.

Emily Weinberg was 2-for-3 to lead the offense, while Jenny Edwards doubled and scored a run. Alyson Onyon came out of the bullpen to pitch the final four innings, allowing just five hits and one run.

In her final collegiate game for the Tigers, Maddie Cousens was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and Alyssa Schmidt was 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. Skye Jerpbak had a pair of hits, including a home run, Erica Nori earned the win in the circle with 6.2 innings of work. She allowed seven hits and struck out six before giving way to Shanna Christian, who picked up the final out to earn the save.
