Women's Tennis Foiled At #39 Harvard

4/5/2014 9:27:00 PM

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman Marika Cusick won her No. 2 singles match, but the women's tennis was dealt its third consecutive Ivy League loss on Saturday in a 6-1 setback at Harvard.

The Crimson, ranked 39th in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, started off the match by winning the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches. The team of Cusick and Alexandra D'Ascenzo was one point away from locking up its No. 1 doubles match when play was halted since the opening point was already clinched.

Five of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets, with just D'Ascenzo forcing a third set in her match at the No. 3 spot. Cusick defeated Monica Lin, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot to account for the Big Red's lone point on the afternoon. It was her team-leading 10th singles victory of the dual season.

The Big Red opens the home portion of its Ivy League schedule next weekend with matches at Reis Tennis Center against Yale on Saturday and Brown on Sunday.
