Box Score LEWISBURG, Pa. — Freshmen
Maddy Sroufe and
Emily Wemhoff had 15 kills apiece, pacing the volleyball team to a sweep of the host team at the Bucknell Invitational on Saturday evening. Game scores were 25-22, 25-21 and 25-19, giving Cornell (2-4) its first sweep of the young season.
Sroufe, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week, had six kills in the first set — including the winning point after Bucknell (1-7) rallied to pull within one at 22-21. Sophomore
Macey Wilson halted the Bison run at five points with one of her eight kills on the night. Bucknell clawed back to within one before an attack error set the stage for Sroufe's winner. Each set ended on a Sroufe kill.
The Big Red then trailed 19-15 in the second set — its largest deficit of the night — before rattling off five straight points to take the lead on Wemhoff's fifth of six kills in the set. Cornell then used a pair of five-point runs in the third to stay comfortably ahead for the rest of the night.
Senior libero
Natasha Rowland had a team-high 21 digs, moving into ninth on the Big Red's career list past Leesa Gotko '99.
While Sroufe and Wemhoff led Cornell in kills, freshman
Kit McCarty (five kills) and Wilson (eight kills) were the most efficient with attack percentages north of .350. Wemhoff also had a team-high four aces on the night — her first aces of the season. Freshman
Chelsea Sincox had a career-high 14 digs.
Cornell improved to 13-2 all-time against Bucknell, with the Big Red avenging a loss last season. The Big Red returns to action next weekend with three matches against in-state opponents at the Syracuse Tournament. Cornell's first match in the event is at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Colgate, followed by a pair of Saturday matches vs. Albany and Syracuse.
