ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell men's soccer returned to action Sunday afternoon in the final day of action at the CU Inaria Classic, defeating Fairleigh Dickinson 2-0 at Berman Field. Sophomore striker Chris St. Germain netted the game-winner in the 48th minute, tapping-in a cross from senior captain Conor Goepel inside the right post.

Cornell (W, 4-2-1) controlled the play through the majority of the contest on a blustery day on East Hill. The persistent wind and a quick burst of rain just after opening kick played havoc with both teams on the offensive end; however, it was the Big Red that was better able to overcome the elements, pocketing two goals in the second half for the team's first multi-goal victory of the season.

The game-winning score came on a beautiful combination play by three Cornell attackers. Sophomore forward Sebastian Scales fed a glorious through ball to Goepel on the left flank. The senior captain ran onto the end of it and made a smooth move to slice to the middle of the box, eluding the on-coming defender, before slipping a cross past Knights keeper Matthew Weigner (L, 1-5-1) to St. Germain. The sophomore forward had no trouble tucking the ball into the yawning goal for his first scoring tally of his Big Red career.

The one-goal lead was all senior keeper Zach Zagorski would need. He made three stops to mark his fifth clean sheet of 2014 and tenth of his career. He was rarely tested throughout the contest, as the Big Red defense locked down Fairleigh Dickinson (L, 1-6-1) throughout the afternoon. The Knights could only muster six shot attempts in the game.

The Big Red upped the advantage to two-nil with a PK marker in the 77th minute. For the second game in a row Cornell earned the free kick with some strong play in the opponent's box. Sophomore transfer Stevin Bienfait corralled a ball in the attacking third and slipped a pass to sophomore Dylan Palacio from left-to-right along the edge of the box. Palacio used his speed to work his way for a free shot; however, the Knights defender hauled him down before he could unleash the attempt. Cornell sent Goepel to the penalty spot, where he coolly drained it low inside the left post for his fourth goal of season.

The Big Red pushed for more scoring plays as time expired in order to up its goal differential for the two-game tournament. Both Cornell and Colgate finished with a perfect six points in the tournament; however, Colgate posted a +4 differential on the strength of two 3-1 victories over Fairleigh Dickinson and Siena. Cornell did not allow a goal in the two-game tournament, but came up just short on the goal differential tiebreaker with a +3 margin. With the two victories, the Big Red upped its record to 7-0 in CU Inaria Classic games.
