SCOUTING CORNELL

Big Red Headlines
Cornell men's soccer bounced back in a big way this past weekend at the CU Inaria Classic, scoring victories over 'currently receiving votes' Siena and Fairleigh Dickinson. The Big Red returned to its hallmark of outworking teams at both ends of the pitch. The team broke through in the 84th minute against Siena, as Sebastian Scales drew a foul in the box, setting the stage for Conor Goepel to drain the game-winner with the penalty kick marker. The Big Red posted a workman like victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday on a blustery afternoon on East Hill. Cornell completely shut down the Knights attack, while Chris St. Germain pocketed the game-winner on his first career goal for the Big Red. Goepel earned the primary assist on the mark, while adding a goal of his own on a penalty kick in the 77th minute.

About Head Coach Jaro Zawislan
Zawislan enters his sixth season at Cornell having established himself as one of the top coaches in the Ivy League during his short tenure. After taking over a program that was 1-15 the season before his appointment as head coach, Zawislan has transformed Big Red men's soccer into a consistent winner and a national presence in NCAA Division I. In his first five seasons on East Hill his teams have posted at least .500 winning percentages four times, while he has led Cornell to three consecutive winning seasons. He also directed the Big Red to its first Ivy League title since 1995 and first outright title since 1977 in 2012. His coaching record currently sits at 45-25-10 and his current .625 winning percentage is the second best mark in program history.

Zawislan is a graduate of Clemson University '93, while he was a four-year starting goalkeeper on the varsity soccer team. Upon his graduation he played professionally both in the United States and his native Poland, before pursuing a career in coaching. He made assistant coaching stops at Stanford, Creighton and Syracuse, before being named Cornell's 11th head coach in 2009.

Last Meeting with Hartwick
Cornell dispatched Hartwick 2-1 in double-overtime a season ago in Oneonta, N.Y. The Big Red had to play catchup from the outset, as the team conceded a goal to the Hawks in the ninth minute of play. The Big Red finally solved the Hartwick defense in the 81st minute on a spectacular header goal from Patrick Slogic. The game went into overtime, where Conor Goepel lashed in his first goal of the season on a delivery from Sebastian Scales in the 107th minute of game action.

Dynamic Defense
The Big Red defense bounced back in a big way following a difficult showing against the nationally ranked Orange. Cornell posted clean sheets in both games of the CU Inaria Classic this weekend. The team has now blanked the opponent in five of seven contests thus far this season. Impressive, has been the team's ability to insulate the net, opponents have averaged just over four shots on goal per game. The Big Red currently rank 19th in NCAA Division I with a 0.54 goals against average on the year.

Parsimonious Paws in Net
Senior keeper Zach Zagorski has been stellar in net for the Big Red this season. He had another great weekend, blanking Siena on Friday and Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday. He was rarely tested, but when both Saints and Knights came at him with quality chances he was there to answer the call. Zagorski currently leads the Ivy League for all eligible keepers in goals against average (0.548) and save percentage (.862). He currently ranks in the top-25 in NCAA Division in two categories; checking in at 19th in save percentage and 21st in goals against average. His 25 saves are third most in the Ivy League. Zagorski is now tied with Dan Mackesey (1974-76) for fourth on the program's all-time shutout list.

Home Sweet Home
Cornell held serve on its home field with two victories over the weekend. Men's soccer is 70-52-17 (.565) all-time at Charles F. Berman Field and is 27-10-8 (.689) at home during head coach Jaro Zawislan's tenure. The Big Red is 20-2-5 (.833) in non-conference home matchups since Zawislan took over in 2009.

Captain Clutch
Conor Goepel continued to perform when the team needed it most. He scored the lone goal in the Big Red's 1-0 victory over Siena on Friday, while he added a goal and assist in the team's 2-0 victory over Faireleigh Dickinson on Sunday. The goal on Friday was the ninth game-winner of his career, moving him all-alone into second on the program's all-time list for the statistic. He has now scored four of Cornell's five goals on the young season.

Player of the Week
Senior captain Conor Goepel secured Co-Player of the Week for the second consecutive week on the strength of a five-point outburst over the weekend. He is the first Big Red player since Daniel Haber '12 to secure the award in consecutive weeks. Goepel scored the game-winner on Friday, while he assisted on the game-winner on Sunday, adding an insurance goal on a penalty kick later in the contest. He currently leads the Ivy League in points (9), goals (4), and game-winning goals (3). The senior also finds himself amongst the nation's elite in NCAA Division I; tied for third in game-winning goals and tied for 45th in points.

Firsts Against Fairleigh
Sophomore attacker Chris St. Germain collected his first career goal against the Knights on Sunday afternoon. He made an excellent run to the net front and made no mistakes with the delivery, smashing it into the far right corner of the net. With the goal, he became the first player other than Goepel to find the back of the net this season for Cornell. The emergence of St. Germain and Scales, as well as newcomers Jonathan Cullom, Dylan Palacio and Rafik Mekhaldi will be huge for a Cornell team that will need secondary scoring to balance out Goepel up top once Ivy League play begins.

Halting the Hawks
Despite the Hawks advantage in the all-time series, Cornell has dominated this long-time rival in recent seasons. The Big Red is 4-0-1 against Hartwick since Jaro Zawislan took over as head coach in 2009.

SCOUTING HARTWICK

Hawk Headlines
Hartwick has struggled immensely out of the gates in 2014. The team enters Wednesday's matchup still looking for its first victory with a record of 0-4-3 on the year. The Hawks picked up a tie in their most recent fixture against Albany, battling to a 2-2 double-overtime draw at Elmore Field. The Hawks showed a unified determination, twice coming back from one-goal deficits to force the overtime sessions.

About Head Coach John Scott
Scott is in his fifth season at the helm of the Hawks. He is coming off a 5-9-4 season and 3-2-1 mark in the team's final season in the Mid-American Conference. He has been consistent, but has been unable to push the Hawks over the top. He markedly improved the team after his first season; however, the Hawks have secured just five victories each of the last three seasons. He was an assistant coach at Binghamton before coming over to his alma mater in 2010. He sports a 17-43-15 career record as head coach.

Fantastic Fowler
Junior forward Dean Fowler is the spark plug at the top of the Hartwick attack. He leads the team with three goals and six points on the season. The Australian sensation potted his latest goal in the 61st minute of the Hawks draw against Albany. The Big Red will need to put the clamps on Fowler if it hopes to score its sixth clean sheet in eight tries on Wednesday.

Rood Breakout
Sophomore midfielder Mike Rood seems to be breaking out in his second year with the Hawks. After not tallying a point in 936 minutes of action as a freshman, he already has three (one goal – one assist) this year. He scored his first collegiate goal to equalize the game against Albany in the 50th minute.

Salacious Shooters
The Hawks will fire attempts at net from anywhere and everywhere. They have racked up 89 shot attempts through seven games, averaging nearly 13 per game. Many of these attempts have come off set pieces and corners. The Hawks have earned 50 corners on the year. Despite the attempts, the Hawks offense has struggled to unlock defenses, solving opponents for just five goals this season.

Second Half Struggles
The Hawks have struggled to maintain the defensive success in the second half of games this season. The team has allowed seven goals in the second half, compared to just four concessions in the opening half of games.

Road Woes
Hartwick enters Wednesday with just a 0-3-1 record away from home this year. The Hawks have found little success at Berman Field in recent seasons. The Big Red is 3-0-0 against Hartwick in the team's last three meetings at Berman, outscoring the Hawks by a 8-3 margin.

UP NEXT
