Box Score (PDF) ITHACA, N.Y. – Men's soccer gutted out a gritty 1-0 victory over Hartwick on a beautiful evening on Wednesday at Berman Field. Senior center back
Devin Morgan tallied the lone marker in the 32
nd minute, his first goal of the season.
The lone scoring play was set up off a corner kick set piece. Senior
Peter Chodas swung a cross in from the left side corner flag across the box. A Hartwick defender was able to get a glancing head on the ball to briefly move it out of harm's way. Senior
Conor Goepel ran down the clearance at the far top right of the box and sent another cross back across the box. Morgan skied to meet it, driving a header with authority into the top right of the net.
With the assist, Goepel stretched his point streak to three straight games and five of his last six contests overall.
Senior keeper
Zach Zagorski (W, 5-2-1) made two saves for his third straight clean sheet. He now has 11 career shutouts, moving all-alone into fourth place on the program's all-time list.
The game was characterized by missed opportunities on both sides. Morgan nearly scored just 16-minutes into the game, as Chodas again delivered an excellent ball off a corner kick, but his heading attempt drifted wide of the post.
Hartwick (L, 0-5-3) had a couple of great chances to equalize. Just three minutes after Morgan tallied his goal, Hawks forward Mike Rood drove a wicked shot that struck the woodwork, nearly bouncing straight down across the goal line. Hawks midfielder Marc Russell had another excellent chance to tie the game in the waning moments. A ball fell to him at the side of the net front; however, he could not keep the ball down, driving his shot high of the yawning cage from six yards out.
Cornell (W, 5-2-1) outshot the Hawks 13-9 for the contest, but will look to tighten up on the defensive end moving forward. While the Big Red was not at its sharpest, Wednesday night's game is a testament to the team's work ethic and ability to pull out positive results.
With the 1-0 victory, the Big Red moved to 4-0 this season at Berman Field. The team has yet to concede in the four home victories this season.
Cornell will wrap up non-conference play on Saturday, as the team continues its five-game home stand. The Big Red will welcome Buffalo for a 7 p.m. kick at Berman Field.
