Volleyball Edged by UNLV

Box Score SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Big Red women's volleyball team was edged by UNLV this afternoon in its second game at the Seton Hall Tournament in South Orange, N.J. Despite being swept by the Rebels, Cornell was in each set, losing 30-32, 21-25, 20-25. Cornell is back in action tomorrow when it takes on Siena at 10 a.m. and Rutgers at 4:30 p.m.
 
Cornell (0-2) was led by Maddy Sroufe and Emily Wemhoff with 11 and nine kills, respectively. Wemhoff also chipped in nine digs and two block assists. Setter Alyssa Phelps had an outstanding game with 30 assists and eight kills with just one error on 15 attempts (.467) to go along with four block assists and one block solo. Defensively, libero Natasha Rowlandhad a match-high 12 digs, while defensive specialist Chelsea Sincox registered 10.
 
UNLV (4-2) hit .245 as a team and featured a balanced offense with five players registering at least six kills. Setter Alexis Patterson finished with 33 assists and libero Allison Davies tallied 12 digs.

Trailing by six points (21-15) late in the first set, the Big Red used a pair of kills and a service ace by Sroufe, as well as one kill each by Jasmine Robinson and Wemhoff, to pull within one-point, 22-21. After trading points, the Big Red then got three straight points from Macey Wilson, who registered a kill and then back-to-back block assists along with Phelps, to take a 25-24 lead. Cornell earned one more set-point, before UNLV retook the lead at 27-26. The Big Red fought off three subsequent set points by the Rebels before back-to-back kills by Ceannia Kincade and Katlin Winters handed UNLV the 32-30 victory.
 
The second set was a back-and-forth battle before the Rebels used a 5-1 scoring run to take an 18-13 lead. Consecutive kills by Wemhoff and Robinson, followed by a service ace from Sroufe, got the Big Red back into the contest at 18-16. The teams traded points to 22-20 but UNLV pulled away for the 25-21 triumph.
 
The Rebels jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the third set, but Cornell used a 8-3 run to pull within a single points (12-11) on a Phelps service ace. Unfortunately, UNLV answered with four unanswered points and rode that advantage to the 25-20 final.
