CINCINNATI, OHIO – Coming off an emotional result Friday night against #2 Louisville, men's soccer dropped its first match of the season, falling to Xavier 1-0 at the XU Soccer Complex on Sunday. Freshmen defender Cory Brown registered the lone goal in the 97th minute, heading a pass across the box from Kyle Martin, besting goalkeeper Zach Zagorski just inside the right post.

For the second game in a row the Cornell (0-1-1) defense turned in a strong performance, limiting Xavier (2-2) to just four shots on goal through regulation. The Big Red limited the Musketeers to just 12 attempts at net through regulation; however, it was unlucky number 13 and the lone shot of the overtime period that felled Cornell on Sunday.

The Big Red came out firing on all cylinders, carrying the pace of play in the opening half. Cornell generated seven corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes and 10 total in the contest. The Big Red recorded four shots in the second half, with sophomore Dylan Palacio registering the best chance of the contest, prompting a save from Xavier goalkeeper Eric Osswald.

For the second game in a row, the Big Red got a large majority of the team involved. Cornell used 19 players in the contest, with 16 players recording at least 15 minutes in the match.

The Big Red will look to get its offense going in its next match, as Cornell returns home for its 2014 home opener against Lafayette on Wednesday, September 10. Opening kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Charles F. Berman Field.
