Marshall Posts Monster Game As Big Red Runs Past Howard, 75-56

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Nia Marshall became the first Cornell women's basketball player to hit the 30-point mark three times in the same season, recording a monster 33-point, 13-rebound double-double as the Big Red ran past Howard in the second half in a 75-56 victory on Wednesday evening at Newman Arena. Cornell improved to 9-5 and tied the school record for non-conference wins in a season.

Marshall hit 14-of-24 shots from the floor, her second game of 14 made field goals on the season and one shy of the school record. Her rebounding total of 13 and her six steals also matched career highs.

"I didn't know she had that many points," said head coach Dayna Smith. "And nor did she, and that's a good thing. She was able to score in so many ways. She's in a great flow right now and she's finding a lot of ways to score, so I'm really proud of her."

While Marshall was the headliner, a number of players had key contributions. Christine Kline had 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals, while Megan LeDuc notched 12 points, six assists and three rebounds. The Big Red assisted on 20 of its 28 baskets and dominated the glass (46-28) against an athletic Bison team. Cornell had 22 offensive rebounds and scored 21 points off them. After shooting 57 percent after halftime, Cornell was at 43 percent for the game.

Howard (1-14) got 18 points from Te'Shya Heslip, who also dished seven assists, ripped down six boards and had five steals in a losing effort. Sydni Johnson had 11 points and eight rebounds and Victoria Gonzales notched nine. The Bison shot 40 percent from the floor, but were 0-for-9 from 3-point range and turned the ball over 20 times. A total of 16 of those turnovers were from Cornell steals.

Marshall had 14 points in the first half to keep Cornell in the game, rallying the Big Red from an eight-point first half deficit to go into halftime tied at 27-27.

"I thought we played a disappointing first half but we challenged the team at half time and I'm proud of their response," said Smith.

An 8-0 Big Red run early in the second half, including the final six points by Marshall, extended Cornell's lead from 37-35 to double-digits (45-35) with 11:40 remaining in regulation, and Howard only briefly got the contest back within single digits and never within seven points the rest of the way.

Down 21-13 midway through the first half, it was Kline that started the rally, hitting consecutive baskets to cut the lead in the half. The defense was outstanding during that run, forcing Howard to miss six straight shots with four turnovers in the 10 possessions before Kline again cashed in, this time from 3-point range, to give Cornell its first lead since the opening minutes at 24-23. The Big Red wouldn't trail the rest of the way.

Nicholle Aston had seven points, eight rebounds, including six offensive boards, three assists and two steals, while Kerri Moran notched four points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Sarah Poland came off the bench to score three points and grab five rebounds in the win.

The Big Red opens Ivy League play when it hosts Columbia on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 1 p.m. at Newman Arena.
