WORCESTER, Mass. – The Big Red field hockey team received five goals from four different players, and defensively limited Holy Cross to just three total shots, as Cornell defeated the Crusaders 5-1 this afternoon at Hart Turf Field in Worcester, Mass. With the victory, the Big Red swept a pair of games this weekend to improve to 7-4 on the season.
Krysten Mayers continued her dominance with a pair of goals to give her a career-high 11 on the season, while
Katy Weeks finished with three assists.
Katie Garrity,
Marisa Siergiej and
Katie Carlson each scored one goal apiece. Carlson also added an assist, while
Taylor Standiford registered her 32nd career assist to move within one of tying Cari Hills' school record.
Defensively, the Big Red allowed Holy Cross to take just three shots, and Cornell gave up just two penalty corners. Sophomore
Kelly Johnson made one save and allowed one goal in 59 minutes of action before
Mackenzie Gagliardi came on in relief and did not face a shot.
Cornell held the 17-3 advantage in shots and the 7-2 edge in penalty corners. Holy Cross goalie Megan Inch made seven saves in the loss.
The Big Red set the tone early, as Garrity scored the game-winning goal just 1:34 into the contest when she tipped in a shot by Weeks form the top of the circle to the far post.
Cornell used a pair of goals less than five minutes apart to take the 3-0 lead in the 19th minute. On the first goal, Carlson sent a pass through the circle that managed to find its way to Mayers, whose shot was initially stopped by Inch, but managed to have enough on it to find its way into the goal. Moments later,
Siergiej scored her sixth goal of the season on a penalty corner with the assists credited to Weeks and Standiford.
The Crusaders scored their lone goal of the game just before the intermission on a nice individual effort by Gabriella Smith when she scored off a rebound from a Johnson save.
The Big Red kept up the pressure in the second half and Mayers netted her second goal of the game when Weeks drove down the right side, centered it back to Mayers at the top of the circle and the sophomore blasted it into the net in the 50th minute
Carlson capped the scoring in the 60th minute with a nice second effort to make it 5-1, scoring after Week's initial shot was saved.
The Big Red returns home for an Ivy League contest vs. Harvard on Marsha Dodson Field on Saturday, Oct. 17 at noon, before heading to the University of Albany to take on the No. 6 Great Danes on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m.
