ITHACA, N.Y. — For the 11th time in 13 games this season, the women's soccer team posted a shutout with a 0-0 draw against Colgate on Monday night at Berman Field.
Cornell (8-1-4) held a 13-5 advantage in shots, which was indicative to the run of play on a clear night under the lights. While the Big Red forced six saves of visiting goalkeeper Erin Cummings, the home side's own goalkeeper — junior
Kelsey Tierney — did not need to make a single save. Tierney was, however, quick off her line to cut down a diagonal run behind the defense by Colgate's Jenna Raepple in the first overtime period. Colgate (4-7-2) had an even more daunting threat midway through the second overtime on a corner kick when Jenna Panepinto rattled the crossbar with a rebound chance after Cornell freshman midfielder
Carolyn Ruoff cleared a ball off the line.
The Big Red had quality chances to break through in the second half. With 20:25 to play, junior midfielder
Elizabeth Crowell feathered a pass between defenders that sent sophomore forward
Tess Pullano into the 18-yard box, but Cummings met her soon thereafter and made the save. With 7 minutes remaining, the Big Red earned a restart wide in the Colgate third. Crowell served a dangerous ball into the box that hit the back of senior midfielder
Amanda Gaggioli, which caused Cummings to miss with her punch attempt. The ball came to senior midfielder
Shanay Fischer, who poked a pass toward the goal mouth that was directed in by junior defender
Kailey Joyce. But the assistant referee's flag was raised for offside, negating the goal. Cornell was whistled for eight offside calls on the night.
Cornell returns to Ivy League play for the rest of the regular season, starting with a Saturday trip to Yale. The Big Red then returns home for Senior Day at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24.
