(PDF) ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell men's soccer closed its non-conference slate in winning fashion Tuesday night, using an early goal to top Colgate, 1-0, at Berman Field.
In the sixth minute, sophomore
Jonathan Cullom sent a ball into the 18-yard box from the left side and found classmate
Eric Nuss, who launched a shot from about 15 yards out past a diving Raiders goalkeeper. The goal was Nuss's first of the season, and Cullom picked up his first assist.
"Jon did a great job of getting down the line and I just kind of peeled off my man," said Nuss. "He did a great job of finding me and I just put it in the back of the net."
Playing with the lead, the Big Red (2-9-1) took a more conservative approach. The team still generated chances offensively, including a header from
JJ Black in the 70
th minute that had to be saved by Colgate keeper Peter Tappenden, but defending became the priority.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Mitchell Meyer made a sliding play to thwart a counterattack from the Raiders (5-6-1) late in the first half and collected all four shots on frame for his first career shutout, with the Big Red backline ensuring that he was hardly tested.
With the win, Cornell snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 2-2-1 at home.
Having officially completed non-conference play, Cornell heads to Yale on Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The Bulldogs are currently tied with the Big Red in the Ivy League standings.
"It's tremendous," said Nuss. "The team is feeling great right now. We had a great week of practice, great result and we're ready to get after Yale."
