HANOVER, N.H. — The men's squash was unable to dig itself out of an early hole Sunday, suffering an upset loss to Dartmouth, 5-4, at John W. Berry Sports Center.
Dartmouth (4-6, 1-4 Ivy League) took the lead after the first three matches, then swept the second rotation to clinch its first victory against Cornell (5-6, 1-4) in the programs' last nine meetings.
Graham Dietz won his match at the No. 6 position, but the Big Red dropped a five-set affair at No. 3 to fall behind, 2-1. After Dartmouth locked up the match, Cornell swept the final three matches via
Aditya Jagtap (No. 1), Gustav Runersjo (No. 4) and
Jordan Brail (No. 7). Jagtap and Dietz were both 2-0 on the weekend.
The loss could have major ramifications in the College Squash Association's national rankings with just one week of matches left before the fields are set for the national championships. Cornell entered this weekend ranked seventh and Dartmouth was 11th, and just the top eight teams make the field for the top-flight Potter Cup.
The Big Red will look to get back on track at 6 p.m. Wednesday, when it plays host to third-ranked Rochester at Belkin International Squash Courts before pivotal matches next weekend against No. 8 Princeton and No. 10 Penn.
