Men's Hockey Drops 1-0 Overtime Decision to #16 Quinnipiac

ITHACA, N.Y. — Sophomore goaltender Mitch Gillam made 24 saves for the men's hockey team, but it was the 25th shot he saw the made the difference in Friday night's overtime loss to Quinnipiac. Travis St. Denis cashed in a pass from Sam Anas 1 minute, 41 seconds into overtime, and the ECAC Hockey-leading Bobcats skated away with a 1-0 victory at Lynah Rink.

Cornell (9-10-3, 7-7-1 ECAC Hockey) had possession behind its own goal just before the goal, but turned the puck over under heavy pressure from the Quinnipiac (17-8-2, 12-2-1) forecheck. An attempted pass between defensemen off the back wall banked to Anas, the Bobcats' leading scorer. He quickly whipped a pass across the low slot to St. Denis, who chipped the puck over a sprawled Gillam, who was scrambling after an inadvertent collision with a teammate in the crease.

The loss was particularly bitter for the Big Red, given an apparent goal by captain John McCarron in the second period that was eventually waved off after officials discussed the play. Reece Willcox's drop pass teed up Cole Bardreau's blast from the top of the right circle. Quinnipiac goalie Michael Garteig made the save, but the puck popped off his left shoulder high into the air. Christian Hilbrich crashed the crease and the puck eventually popped out to McCarron, who had an easy conversion from close range. After a long delay in the video review room, the officials huddled at center ice and waved off the goal, determining Hilbrich made contact with Garteig without being pushed into him by a defender.

It's the second time this season the Bobcats, currently ranked 16th in the country, pulled out a 1-0 victory over the Big Red with a late goal. Quinnipiac eked out a similar victory late in the third period with Cornell visiting in November. It was the first time the Big Red lost in five overtime games this season.

Cornell is back in action at 7 p.m. Saturday against Ivy League rival Princeton at Lynah Rink.
