Men's Squash Takes Down Princeton In Ivy Finale
Â
ITHACA, N.Y. — For just the fourth time in 51 all-time meetings, the men's squash team defeated Princeton on Sunday afternoon at Belkin International Squash Courts. Freshman
Jordan Brail provided the clinching match at the No. 7 position, leading the Big Red to a 5-4 victory.
Â
Cornell (6-7, 2-5 Ivy League) entered the week ranked 11th by the College Squash Association, but could move up following this weekend's results. While the Big Red dropped a Friday decision against No. 9 Penn, Princeton was tabbed eighth entering the weekend — which hints at more shuffling within the national rankings in advance of the final week of the regular season.
Â
The Big Red's chances looked dim after the first two rotations Sunday, with the visiting Tigers (5-7, 3-4) holding a 4-2 lead and just one point away from clinching the match. But Cornell stormed back to sweep the final three matches. Senior
Aditya Jagtap won handily in three sets from the No. 1 position, and junior Gustav Runersjo fought off an early deficit to win at the No. 4 spot to tie the match at 4 and leave the balance in the hands of the No. 7 match. That's where Brail fought off Princeton's Sam Ezratty with a 13-11 edge in the second game to maintain momentum and eventually win in three sets to give the Big Red the victory.
Â
The win brings back memories to Princeton's last victory to Belkin, when the Tigers were undefeated and ranked No. 1 at the time before suffering a 5-4 to the Big Red two years ago.
Â
Cornell defeated No. 25 Hobart, 8-1, later Sunday afternoon. Freshman
Seb Obieta-Chichizola recorded his first collegiate victory, and
Geoff Keating won in just his second appearance of the season.
