#52 Men's Tennis Concludes Non-League Play vs. St. John's, Buffalo

ITHACA, N.Y. — With five victories over its last seven matches, the men's tennis team will look to continue its roll with its final non-league matches this week. The Big Red will play host to St. John's at 3 p.m. Wednesday and Buffalo at 1 p.m. Sunday at Reis Tennis Center.

Cornell (6-5), which is ranked 52nd in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, breezed to a 7-0 victory over Binghamton on Saturday night on a strength of a sweep in doubles and four straight-set victories in singles. Three of those came from the top three positions, anchored by senior Sam Fleck, junior Stefan Vinti and sophomore Bernardo Casares Rosa. Sophomore Dylan Brown also won in straight sets from the No. 6 position. Four of the Big Red's six victories this season have come against teams ranked in the ITA's Top 75 — Texas-San Antonio, Iowa, Penn State and Old Dominion.

For St. John's, the doubles team of juniors Lucas Hejhal and Vaidik Munshaw are ranked 49th in the country by the ITA, though they were defeated by Brown's unranked pairing of Justin To and Brandon Yeoh at the No. 1 position in last Friday's match in New York. The Red Storm went on to win the doubles point with victories at the bottom two spots, but the Bears ultimately won the match, 4-3. Senior Erick Reyes (No. 2) and Munshaw (No. 6) won singles points for St. John's, which fell to 4-6 on the season.

Oddly enough, Buffalo's last match was also against Brown. The Bears defeated the Bulls, 6-1, on March 7 to drop the visitors to 8-5 on the season. Buffalo has played Ivy League teams four times this season, and lost each tilt. Sophomore Jonathan Hannestad is 9-2 from primarily the lower half of the singles order, and he has also teamed with junior Sergio Arevalillo to post a 5-3 record from the No. 1 doubles spot. Junior Pablo Alvarez is 5-1 in No. 2 singles.

The Big Red is 14-1 all-time against St. John's, including a 7-0 victory on March 22, 2014 at Reis Tennis Center. Silviu Tanasoiu is 3-0 against the Red Storm as the Director of Intercollegiate Tennis and Savitt-Weiss Head Coach of Men's Tennis. Cornell has been similarly dominant against Buffalo with a 24-1 series lead. But the lone loss against the Bulls came recently, with the injury-riddled Big Red falling, 4-3, on Jan. 19, 2014.
