Big Red Break Program Records in 23-6 Rout of California

Box Score (PDF)

BERKELEY, Calif. – Cornell women's lacrosse kicked off its Spring Break trip with a program record performance on Sunday afternoon against California. The Big Red put up a prolific offensive display, setting a new single-game program record with 23 goals in the 23-6 blasting of the Golden Bears at Memorial Stadium.

Sophomore Meredith Baker scored the history making goal, after earning a free-position by getting fouled inside the arc. Off the restart, she charged in three steps before snapping a quick shot low on the Golden Bears backup goalkeeper Kate Gutierrez. Not only was the tally a history making goal for the program, but it also was the sophomore's first career collegiate marker.

Senior co-captain Lindsay Toppe keyed the offensive explosion, tallying a goal on all seven of her shot attempts in the contest. She went 2-for-2 on free-position opportunities, while also adding a ground ball and two draw controls. The seven goal output tied her career best single-game mark. The effort also moved her into fourth place on the program's all-time goal scoring list with 134 for her career; passing Catherine Simmons (128; 2005-08) and Cari Hills (131; 1995-98).

Sophomore mid Amie Dickson also had a career day with a game-high eight points. She netted a hat trick, while chipping in five helpers. Junior attacker Olivia Mattyasovszky also netted a trio of goals for her second hat trick of the year.

Senior Sarah Hefner, sophomore Catherine Ellis and classmate Kristy Gilbert each pumped in a pair of goals. Hefner also secured three draw controls in the game to become the program's all-time leader in the statistic with 143 for her career, making it the second program record to fall on the afternoon. She passed previous record-holder Jaimee Reynolds (1999-2002) who had 141 career draw controls.

Sophomore Christy Powell, freshman Joey Coffy and fellow first-year Taylor Reed each joined Baker with single tallies. Junior Emily Tripodi, fellow third-year Jessica Schwab and freshman Paige Craig each added lone assists, bringing the final total to 13 players with at least one point in the game.

Sophomore defender Catie Smith and fellow second-year goalkeeper Renee Poullott keyed a strong defensive effort as well in holding California (2-8) to just six goals in the contest. Smith finished with a pair of caused turnovers, as Cornell (7-2) forced 11 in the contest. Poullott was lightly tested, but was strong when called upon, making four saves including a pair of free-position stops.

While the astounding goal total was a story in and of itself, Cornell's precision in the offensive third was unbelievable. Although the Big Red has outshot its opponent in eight of its nine contests this season, after today's 28-17 advantage, the squad did an excellent job in getting the ball on net. Cornell only put four attempted shots off the cage in the game.

The Big Red continued its trend of fast starts against the Golden Bears. Toppe tallied her first of the afternoon 1:27 into the game, while Hefner pumped in the next two to stake Cornell to a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of play.

After Parker Garrett pulled one back for the Golden Bears, the Big Red added another three-goal run to take control of the contest. Reed found the back of the net for the fourth game over the last five overall, while Gilbert added the next pair to open up the lead.

California regrouped with a quick two-goal run of its own, as Sasha Anielski pumped in two goals over a 40-second span to cut the home side's deficit to three with just over eight minutes remaining in the opening half.

The Big Red responded with its third three-goal run of the half to snuff out the comeback bid for good. Dickson began the scoring run with a pair of tallies, while Coffy capped the run with 2:46 left in the half with a score off a free-position. Although California ended the half on a goal from Meredith Haggerty with 25-seconds remaining, the game was well in the Big Red's control. While the Golden Bears surprisingly held a 13-12 advantage in shots, it was the Big Red that had the 9-4 lead at the break.

Cornell regrouped at the half and wasted little time in adding to its lead. The visitors pumped in nine straight goals in the first 11:33 of the second half to push its advantage to 18-4.

Dickson got the run started with a nice goal off a free-position to collect her fourth hat trick of the season. The Big Red would go a perfect 6-for-6 on free-positions in the game.

Toppe and Ellis would account for the next eight tallies of the run between the two of them. Six of the goals would come from the crosse of Toppe, who capped the run with a trio of goals. A five-goal blitz over a 2:25 span preceded the three-goal string for Toppe, with Ellis netting two and Toppe the other three.

With the sizeable lead, Cornell looked to get its talented reserves plenty of action down the stretch. They wasted little time getting into the act, as Mattyasovszky would score three on Cornell's five-goal run to end the game.

Cornell's 7-2 start is its best since equaling the mark in 2012. The team has now topped the 20+ goal mark twice in a season for just second time ever; joining the 2012 Big Red who achieved the feat in 21-7 and 22-13 victories over Canisius and Jacksonville, respectively.

The Big Red will return to action on Tuesday evening when it takes on Western power Stanford in the second game of its two-game West Coast swing. The Cardinal enter the matchup with a 5-1 record and were ranked ninth in both major national polls this past week. Opening draw is scheduled for 10 p.m. EST.
