Men’s Hockey Eliminated From Postseason With Loss to Union

Box Score Box Score (PDF)

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell men's hockey team's season came to a close Saturday night with a 7-0 loss to Union in Game 2 of an ECAC Hockey Championships first-round series at Lynah Rink. The Dutchmen won the best-of-three series, 2-0, leaving the Big Red with a season-ending 11-14-6 record.

Union (18-16-2), which is seeded 10th in the league tournament, scored twice in a span of 1 minute, 34 seconds midway through the first period, then added a five-on-three goal a little later to open up a 3-0 lead after the first period.

Cornell, which was the seventh seed, created several good scoring chances in the second period to try to get back in the game. Freshman forward Dwyer Tschantz stripped the puck away from a Union defender in the slot, then drew a hooking penalty as his shot was flicked away by the glove of Dutchmen goalie Colin Stevens. Senior forward John McCarron then hit the post on the ensuing power play.

But it clearly wasn't the Big Red's night. Just 28 seconds after Cornell's power play expired, Mike Vecchione worked his way through the defense and made a move to his backhand that pushed Union's lead to four goals. Spencer Foo's second goal of the night with 3:59 left in the frame made it 5-0. Two more goals in the third period closed out the scoring.

The series loss marks the first time Cornell has lost in the first round of the ECAC Hockey Championships since the league first implemented its current 12-team playoff format for the 2002-03 season.
