ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's tennis team continues a string of road matches to start the Ivy League season when it takes on Harvard at 1 p.m. Saturday and Dartmouth at 1 p.m. Sunday. The match at Harvard will be broadcast on the
Ivy League Digital Network. Live scores for both matches will be posted for free
here.
Cornell (8-6, 0-1 Ivy League) slipped nine spots in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings to 55th this week in the wake of a 6-1 loss to No. 26 Columbia last Saturday. Sophomore
Chris Vrabel accounted for the Big Red's lone point with a victory at No. 4 singles, aided by his opponent's injury default when they were even in the third set. Vrabel leads the team with a 10-2 record in singles. Senior and five-time All-Ivy selection
Sam Fleck has teamed up with sophomore
Colin Sinclair to go 8-1 in doubles. Sophomore
Bernardo Casares Rosa has won seven of his last eight matches from the No. 3 singles position.
Harvard (14-5) enters league play ranked 36th in the country following easy home victories over Buffalo and Amherst last Saturday. Senior Denis Nguyen is ranked 38th in the country in singles with an 8-5 record from the No. 1 position. Junior Nicky Hu is ranked 120th and competes most often from the No. 2 spot, though he is 5-0 when dropped to No. 3. Sophomore Brian Yeung has a nine-match winning streak, appearing anywhere in the order but No. 2. He also teams with Nguyen to form the country's No. 15 doubles team, which is 10-4 from the No. 1 spot.
Harvard leads the all-time series, 62-11, though three of those Cornell victories have come over the last seven meetings. Seniors
Sam Fleck and
Jason Luu won singles matches in the Big Red's 5-2 loss in last year's Ivy League match.
Dartmouth (9-8), which opens Ivy play Saturday against Columbia, jumping 10 spots in the ITA rankings this week to 50th after wrapping a five-match road swing last week. The Big Green knocked off No. 36 SMU on March 24 before suffering setbacks against No. 65 Tulane and No. 32 Florida State over the weekend. Thirteen of Dartmouth's 17 matches to date were against teams ranked in the Top 75 at the time. Junior Dovydas Sakinis is ranked 86th in singles, with senior Chris Kipouras close behind at No. 91. They also team up to form the No. 21 doubles team in the country.
Dartmouth holds a 44-21-2 advantage in the all-time series against Cornell, though the Big Red has won five of the last eight meetings. The Big Red dropped a 4-2 decision to the Big Green in Ivy play last season, getting its points through doubles and No. 1 singles victory from Fleck against Sakinis in straight sets.
