(PDF) ITHACA, N.Y. — In the Big Red's first contest on Berman Field of the 2015 season, Binghamton snuck by with a 1-0 victory thanks to an Alex Varkatzas goal early in the second half.
Cornell put pressure on early, but the first half was mostly a defensive battle, with neither side gaining a clear advantage. The Bearcats threatened late in the second half, but couldn't connect on a cross, and the Big Red took advantage of the misstep and cleanly cleared the ball out of the penalty area to remain unscathed at the break.
Early in the second frame, freshman goalkeeper
Rhys Moller slid out to stop a Bearcat forward on a fast break and keep the score even at zero.
Binghamton got on the board just a few moments later in the 67th minute, when a corner led to a frenzy in front of the net and Varkatzas heading home a pass from Zach Galluzzo into the left side of the goal.
The Big Red outshot the Bearcats in the second half, 10-7, and sophomore
Jonathan Cullom created several offensive threats for Cornell, including a dangerous cross that had to be intercepted by Binghamton goalkeeper Robert Moewes.
In addition to solid play on the backline, defenders junior
Liam Crotty and sophomore
Eric Nuss also contributed offensively, leading the team with three shots each. Moller had five saves in his first home start.
The Big Red falls to 0-5, but four of the team's losses have been by just one goal. Cornell will look to get in the win column in the CU Inaria Classic this weekend, when Duquesne and Air Force visit Berman Field for Homecoming weekend action. The Big Red kicks off against the Dukes on Friday night at 7 p.m. and against the Falcons on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader with the women's team.
