Mayers Quick Strikes Lifts Field Hockey Over Maine

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore Krysten Mayers scored a pair of goals 26 seconds apart late in the first half and the Big Red defense withstood an onslaught by Maine in the second half as the Cornell field hockey team ran its current win-streak to four games with a 2-0 victory over the Black Bears. The win comes on the second day of the Catamount Field Hockey Classic in Burlington, Vt., and improves the Big Red to 4-2, while Maine had a four-game win streak snapped and slips to 7-2 on the season.

Cornell won the Classic title and Mayers, who also registered an assist in Saturday's game vs. Vermont, was named the tournament MVP. Along with Mayers, junior Katy Weeks, and freshmen Isabel Siergiej and Mackenzie Gagliardi were named to the all-tournament team. Weeks was an integral part of the Cornell offense and defense all weekend long, while Siergiej scored both goals in the Big Red's 2-0 win vs. the Catamounts on Saturday, and Gagliardi picked up a pair of shutout victories in the first starts of her collegiate career.

Sunday's contest was tightly contested, with Maine holding the 17-12 advantage in shots and the 13-8 edge in penalty corners, but the Big Red had double the shots on goal (4-2) and managed to capitalize on two of its opportunities.

Both of Mayers' goals came in the 26th minute of play, with the first coming at the 25:11 mark as she collected a rebound off a blocked shot from Marisa Siergiej and beat Maine goalie Emma Cochran to the far post. Just 26 seconds later, Mayers had a break away and slipped the ball past Corchran as she charged off her line.

Cochran made one save and allowed two goals in 35 minutes of action before giving way to Emily Corbett at the half. Corbett finished with one save as well.

Gagliardi made two saves for the Big Red to pick up her second consecutive shutout victory.

Cornell opens Ivy League play next weekend as it travels to Penn on Friday, Sept. 25 at noon.
