(PDF)EASTON, Penn. – The Cornell men's soccer season got off to a quick start, with the Big Red notching its first goal of 2015 in the seventh minute, but Lafayette answered with two goals of its own to beat Cornell, 2-1 at Oaks Stadium.
Junior
Madison Heck got the Big Red (0-1) on the board early with a goal on the counter attack, slotting home a pass from sophomore
Tommy Griffin that originated from a cross by junior
Chris St. Germain. But the Leopards (2-0-1) knotted the score just over ten minutes later when Joe DeStefano tucked away Ben Marks cross off a restart.
In the 38th minute, Lafayette was awarded a free kick in the center of the field just outside the 18-yard box. Marks got the kick over Cornell's wall, but sophomore goalkeeper
Mitchell Meyer was there to make the save to keep the game even going into the break.
Greg Biggiani got the go-ahead goal for the Leopards in the 60th minute when he tapped the ball into an open net after he chipped it around Meyer, who was sliding out to challenge.
Biggiani got another one-on-one chance on Meyer late in the second half, but Meyer came up with the stop to keep it a one-goal game. The Big Red continued to pressure until the final whistle, with sophomore
Jonathan Cullom firing a shot in the 89th minute that beat the goaltender and had to be saved by a Lafayette defender.
Meyer made seven saves in his first collegiate start.
The Big Red is back in action on Monday for a Labor Day matchup at Lehigh at 7 p.m.
