OLEAN, N.Y. — Sophomore forward
Paige DeLoach and junior midfielder
Elizabeth Crowell scored first-half goals, and the women's soccer team sailed to a tournament-opening 3-0 victory over Cleveland State on Friday at the Alumni Classic, hosted by St. Bonaventure.
Junior goalkeeper
Kelsey Tierney was called upon to make just two saves to give Cornell (2-0-1) its third consecutive shutout to open the season, as every field player on the Big Red's roster appeared in the game against Cleveland State (3-2-1).
The Big Red poured it on in the first half, holding a decisive 10-1 advantage in shots. DeLoach scored her second goal in as many games with an unassisted tally in the eighth minute. Crowell then netted her first goal of the season by converting a penalty kick in the 22nd minute. Senior midfielder
Amanda Gaggioli then scored an insurance goal in the second half, assisted by freshman midfielder
Jessica Ritchie.
The shutout was the ninth of Tierney's career, which moves her up to a tie for sixth with Kate Thompson (1983-84) on Cornell's all-time list for clean sheets. For the second straight season, the Big Red has not conceded a goal in its first three games. Cornell returns to the Alumni Classic at noon Sunday with a game against Akron, which scored in the 90th minute to defeat St. Bonaventure, 2-1, in Friday's nightcap. With a win against the Zips, the Big Red would win the Alumni Classic and be off to its best start in a season since 2005.
