Women's Hockey Dominates Brown, Skates to 2-2 Overtime Tie

ITHACA, N.Y. --- After outshooting Brown 48-17 and having the game-winning goal waived off in overtime, women's hockey skated to a 2-2 tie with the Bears on Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink.
Cornell (8-8-3, 4-5-3 ECAC Hockey) took a 1-0 lead 5:47 into the game when freshman Lenka Serdar netted her first career goal. Senior Jess Brown fed the puck to Erin O'Connor, whose shot ricocheted off Brown goaltender Monica Elvin and out to Serdar, who was alone in the left circle and able to fire it home.

The Big Red continued to dominate throughout the first stanza and had several odd-man rushes that came up empty, including a 2-on-0 where junior Kaitlin Doering slid a pass over to classmate Hanna Bunton and a shorthanded breakaway from senior Taylor Woods where Elvin made a pad stop.

Brown (3-14-1, 1-10-1 ECAC Hockey) equalized 13:02 into the second period when Abby Niewchas' shot from the point deflected off a defenseman's shoulder. Cornell goaltender Paula Voorheis shut the door on several other quality chances from the Bears in the second period, including a sprawling stick save with about nine minutes remaining in the frame.

Brown posted its highest shot output of the game in the second with nine. The Big Red however, doubled the Bears' shots with 18 in the middle stanza and regained the lead just 1:49 after Niewchas' tying goal. Bunton buried freshman Micah Hart's try from the point on the power play, giving Cornell a 2-1 advantage and marking Bunton's 10th goal of the year.

The Bears' game-tying tally came on another bad bounce in front of the Cornell net at 3:56 of the third on Cynthia Kyin's shot after Sam Donovan had won the faceoff back to Kyin.

The Big Red turned the heat up for the remainder of the game, carrying play and getting a number of good looks on goal, putting 16 more shots on Elvin, including three each from Brown and Doering. Cornell's top line of Bunton, Doering and Brown alone outshot the Bears' four-period total, combining for 18 shots on the evening.

Leah Olson took a penalty with seven seconds left in regulation, allowing the Big Red to begin the overtime period on the power play. The Big Red thought it had scored the game-winner on the man-advantage when Pippy Gerace buried a rebound. However, the official had whistled the play dead just before Gerace's shot, and after review, the play was ruled no goal.

Cornell returns to Lynah Rink next weekend for a pair of pivotal games against ECAC Hockey opponents, Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Friday's game against the Golden Knights, set for 3 p.m., will be broadcast on ESPN3. The Big Red will then face the Saints on 3 p.m. on Saturday.
