ITHACA, N.Y. --- Two empty-net goals sealed a 5-1 St. Lawrence victory against Cornell women's hockey Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink.

St. Lawrence took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Brooke Webster sent a pass to Kennedy Marchment from below the goal line, and Marchment tucked away a low shot at 9:12 of the first. Just over four minutes later, the Saints doubled their lead when Nadine Edney found Hannah Miller.

Junior goaltender Paula Voorheis, however, made a number of impressive saves in the early goings of the game. She closed the door on Edney and Miller, who had chances just outside the crease about four minutes into the game. Then, at 5:49, she robbed Webster, gloving down a blast from the slot.

In the second period, St. Lawrence pulled ahead, 3-0, on a shorthanded goal at 8:05 from Jenna Marks on Cornell's first power play of the game.

With 9:44 to go in the middle stanza, senior Jess Brown took a shot that St. Lawrence goaltender Grace Harrison tipped with her glove. The puck ricocheted up and behind Harrison and fell just on top of the net. Moments later, Brown had another opportunity, redirecting a pass from junior Hanna Bunton, who had powered through the St. Lawrence defense and into the zone.

Senior Anna Zorn got the Big Red (8-9-4, 4-6-4 ECAC Hockey) on the board at 14:18 of the second. Zorn gloved down a St. Lawrence (13-10-3, 7-5-2) breakout pass along the right boards to keep the puck in the zone. After Zorn battled a defenseman down through the circle, the puck squirted out to freshman Diana Buckley who fed Zorn on the far post for Zorn's first goal of the season.

A pair of St. Lawrence penalties gave the Big Red 1:36 of 5-on-3 hockey midway through the third period. Cornell worked the puck through the zone and generated a number of chances, including several blasts from the point from senior Cassandra Poudrier and crafty tries from classmate Taylor Woods, but Harrison was there to stop all of them.

The Big Red pulled Voorheis, who made 20 saves on the night, with 4:29 to go in favor of an extra attacker, but Justine Reyes and Amanda Boulier took advantage of the empty net to cement the 5-1 win for the Saints.

Cornell hits the road next weekend, heading to the capital region to take on Union on Jan. 29 and Rensselaer on Jan. 30.
