POTSDAM, N.Y. — Junior goaltender
Mitch Gillam made 30 saves, but Clarkson scored a power-play goal in overtime with a shot off a Cornell defenseman to hand the Big Red a 2-1 loss on Friday night at Cheel Arena. #13/14 Cornell (11-6-3, 6-5-2 ECAC Hockey) got its one goal from freshman forward
Mitch Vanderlaan on the power play.
Clarkson (12-10-3, 4-6-3) drew a penalty in overtime when a Cornell backchecker was deemed to have held the Golden Knights' shooter on a two-on-one. That gave Clarkson a power play for potentially the last 1 minute, 19 seconds of the game, but it didn't need all of it — Terrance Amorosa's one-timer from the top of the right circle bounced into the net in Cornell's eighth overtime game of the season.
After Clarkson primarily carried the play in the first period, Cornell dominated the early going of the second with the help of two power plays in relatively close succession. The Big Red had prolonged possession toward the end of the second man advantage and with the teams on the long change and Golden Knights penalty killers out of gas,
Anthony Angello fed Vanderlaan coming out of the left corner. He fired a shot toward the near post that Clarkson goalie Greg Lewis got a piece of, but the puck ultimately dropped back down and over the goal line for Vanderlaan's sixth goal of the season — which is tied for second-most on the team.
Clarkson didn't get its first shot on goal in the frame until after the midway point when a botched Cornell clear led to an open shot from Paul Geiger in the high slot, which Gillam snagged with his glove. The Golden Knights threatened again with 5:10 to play in the period, but
Reece Willcox broke up a two-on-one and Gillam made a save on Dylan Gareau on the rebound. After another long Cornell shift in the offensive zone,
Alec McCrea was open coming down the slot and hit the post.
Clarkson then took momentum back with just 18.5 seconds left in the period on James de Haas' goal. Jordan Boucher drove wide on the rush, but had the puck poked away by the defender. The Golden Knights regained possession behind the net and a centering pass slid all the way to de Haas at the top of the far circle, where he converted into an open net with Gillam and the Cornell defense mired in traffic.
This was Cornell's eighth overtime game of the season, where it now sports a 3-2-3 record. The Big Red, which is now winless in its last five games, continues its stretch of four consecutive road games with a visit to St. Lawrence at 7 p.m. Saturday in Canton.
