HAMILTON, N.Y. — Sarah Coy scored in the 84th minute for Colgate to hand the women's soccer team a 1-0 loss on Monday night in the team's final non-league game of the season at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Coy's winner came on a quick counterattack that started with a change of possession at the top of the Raiders' third of the field. The second touch came from Mara Cosentino just shy of midfield, with her perfectly weighted pass between the Big Red's central defenders sending Coy off to the races. Two Cornell defenders eventually drew even with Coy, but she got a shot away from about 15 yards that beat Cornell senior goalkeeper
Kelsey Tierney to her right.
On a night when Cornell (3-7-2) provided more rest than usual for its starters with 19 different players logging more than 30 minutes on the night, the Big Red made one last push after falling behind. Senior midfielder
Elizabeth Crowell created a turnover in the middle third and quickly sent junior forward
Tess Pullano toward goal. She got through one defender and lined up a shot, but it sailed over the crossbar with a little more than three minutes remaining.
Making her first collegiate start, Colgate (5-6-3) sophomore Laura Leonard made six saves for the shutout — and she needed to survive a Big Red territorial advantage in the first half. Cornell held a 13-3 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes, and it had the game's first six corner kicks. But the Big Red came up empty offensively for a fifth straight game.
Cornell returns to Ivy League play for the rest of its regular season, with three of its final four games at Berman Field. That stretch kicks off at 1 p.m. Saturday with a visit from Yale.
