ITHACA, N.Y. — The Yale Bulldogs scored three goals in the second half to top the men's soccer team, 3-0, in an Ivy League matchup on Berman Field Sunday afternoon.
The teams traded scoring chances in the first half, and Cornell did well to create a flow of play in the offensive third throughtout the first 45 minutes of play.
Freshman
George Pedlow nearly put the Big Red on top in the fourth minute when he got on the end of a service and headed the ball towards the goal, but Bulldog goalkeeper Kees Schipper made the save. Near the end of the half, sophomore
Ryan Watters trapped and controlled the ball between two Yale defenders at the top of the box but fired a rocket just wide of the right post. Cornell fired five shots in the first half.
Yale (2-5-2, 1-1-1 Ivy League) had six corner kicks in the first half, but the Cornell (1-10-2, 0-3-0) defense did well to keep the threats to a minimum, and freshman goalkeeper
Ryan Shellow braved traffic a few times to punch the ball away. It was Shellow that kept the game scoreless in the 13th minute when he squared up to Nicky Downs, who was unmarked in the box, and made a diving point-blank save to his right to parry the ball out for a corner kick.
The teams entered the half scoreless but the Bulldogs came out firing after the break and scored just 90 seconds into the second half and then went on to add two more within 10 minutes to go up 3-0.
Downs sent in a curving free kick from 30 yards out that Henry Flugstad-Clark was able to flick into the goal and then just over two minutes later, Justin Lobe fired a shot from the top of the box that was able to beat Shellow for the 2-0 lead. Ollie Iselin finished the Bulldog offensive onslaught in the 53rd minute when he finished a cross from Lucas Kirby.
Shellow finished with two saves while Schipper had three. Yale outshot Cornell 15 to six in the game.
The team returns to action on Saturday when it heads to Brown for another Ivy League battle with the Bears.
"We've got four games left in the Ivy League and in the season. We've got a full week of training and we'll get after it tomorrow." said head coach
John Smith.
