Box Score (PDF)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown's Matthew Chow scored the lone goal of the game on a second half penalty kick to give the Bears a 1-0 win over Cornell in Providence on Sunday afternoon.

Neither offense could get into the flow of the game in the first half, but the Cornell (1-11-2, 0-4 Ivy League) defense did well to keep the Brown (7-6-1, 2-1-1 Ivy League) offense at bay by getting in passing lanes and using their bodies to give the Bears a tough game.

Five minutes into the game, James Myall was fed on the right flank near the box and junior co-captain Eric Nuss blocked two cross attempts with his body before his determination led to a clearance. With the Bears advancing towards the Cornell net in the 32nd minute, Nuss stepped up to cut off a Brown through ball attempt and then a few minutes later hustled after Quinn English on the wing and timed his tackle perfectly to knock it out for a throw.

As the clock ticked towards the half, freshman goalkeeper Ryan Shellow did his part to keep the game tied when Chow cut into the box and got around a Cornell defender to fire a rocket but Shellow smothered the shot.

Shellow finished with four saves.

Less than a minute into the second half, Brown was awarded a penalty kick when Nate Pomeroy went down in the box and Chow stepped up to the spot and converted it for the 1-0 lead.

The goal gave Cornell a spark, though, and the team fired five shots in the second half, with the best chance coming from senior Madison Heck when Allen Michael Capo found him at the top of the box for a clear strike on goal, but Erik Hanson made the one-handed save to push the ball over the crossbar.

Hanson made two saves in the game, and final shots fell in Brown's favor, 10-5.

Cornell returns home on Saturday night to take on Princeton in the penultimate home game of the season.
