ITHACA, N.Y. —
Jack Ferguson scored an equalizer in the 87th minute for the men's soccer but Penn was able to find the net first in the second overtime period to steal the game, 2-1, on Sunday night at Berman Field.
The offense was stagnant for both teams in the first 20 minutes of play, but the Big Red defense stood strong when it had to. Penn (3-1-4) earned four corners in the first half, but the Cornell (0-8-2) cleared the ball each time and didn't allow a shot on any of the four. The Big Red limited the Quakers to three shots in the first half and freshman goalkeeper
Ryan Shellow was able to save all three, including a charging save on a dangerous ball in in the 26th minute.
Freshman
George Pedlow nearly gave Cornell the lead in the 21st minute when his header off of a
Ryan Watters corner kick went inches wide of the left post.
Penn broke the tie just over a minute into the second half when Alec Neumann was fed in close to goal and finished the ball, but it turned a switch on for Cornell and the team began to dominate the last 30 minutes of regulation.
The Big Red went on to record 12 shots in the second half and 20 overall in the game, a season high. Freshman
George Pedlow recorded five shots in the second half and forced Penn goalkeeper Etan Mabourakh to make two difficult saves.
With the momentum on Cornell's side, the squad kept pushing for the equalizer and finally found it in the 87th minute. Senior
Duff Bedrosian carried the ball just inside the box and flicked the ball with his right foot over to an open
Ryan Watters on the right flank. The sophomore one-touched a beautiful chip towards the penalty spot for senior
Jack Ferguson, who headed the ball to the low far post to tie the game, 1-1.
"I thought we didn't play to well in the first 20 minutes but after that we fought our way back in and we deserved to get the goal near the end," said head coach
John Smith.
Pedlow nearly scored the game-winner on a header with under two minutes to go in regulation but the ball again went just inches wide with under two to go in the first overtime.
Cornell had the edge going into overtime, and outshot Penn 3-2 in the first extra period. Junior
Jonathan Cullom kept pressuring the Quaker defense and did well throughout the game to get into space and take shots, firing four on the day, and Pedlow just missed the game-winner again when Mabourakh made a sprawling save on his header in the first overtime.
Unfortunately, it was Penn that was able to break the deadlock when Neumann once again finished a ball at the far post to end the game at 2-1.
"I think we did enough to win the game and it was unfortunate to lose the way we did," said Smith.
It was the fifth overtime game this year for the Big Red. Shellow finished with five saves while Mabourakh finished with seven. Cornell and Penn both took 20 shots.
"Losing is not ideal but it's not all over. For us, it's rebounding and they've done a great job of that so far this year," said Smith.
Cornell will look to rebound on Saturday when it travels to Harvard for a 4:00 p.m. Ivy League matchup.
