Box Score (PDF)

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard scored three first half goals on its away to a 4-0 win over the men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon at Jordan Field. Harvard moved to 5-3-2 (1-0-1, Ivy League) while Cornell fell to 0-9-2 (0-2, Ivy League).

The Crimson got on the board early in the first half, scoring just 2:44 into the game when Cesar Farias broke through the backline and ran onto a ball and beat freshman goalkeeper Ryan Shellow from the top of the box.

Harvard made it 2-0 in the 20th minute when Jake Freeman was sent in with a long ball over the backline that he was able to chip over a leaping Shellow. The Crimson added a third goal with 10 minutes to go in the half when Christian Sady sent in a curving corner kick. Shellow did well to get his gloves on the ball but the Cornell defense was unable to clear the ball and it deflected in for the 3-0 lead.

The Big Red kept pushing to cut the Crimson lead and nearly made it 3-1 in the 41st minute when junior captain Eric Nuss sent in a deep ball to the right post that freshman Brady Dickens was able to head towards the opposite post, but Kyle Parks was there for the save. Sophomore Ryan Watters and freshman George Pedlow worked hard to create multiple chances throughout the half.

Cornell came out in the second half determined to get on the scoreboard and outshot Harvard six to three in the last 45 minutes of play.

Just a minute into the second half, junior Jonathan Cullom sent in a free kick from the right flank that freshman Kyle Walsh flicked on with his right foot but it bounced wide of the left post. Freshman Christophe Gerlach had a chance in the 60th minute when he lined up a strike from just outside the box but Parks got down to make the save.

Despite the Cornell push, it was Harvard that would find the net again, as the Crimson made it 4-0 in the 69th minute when Freeman finished a long throw and flick.

Shellow finished two saves while his counterpart Parks finished with six and Harvard finished with 10 shots to Cornell's nine. Walsh finished with three shots and Gerlach added two.

Cornell wraps up non-conference play on Tuesday night when it heads to Colgate for a 7 p.m. match up, and then returns home to begin the remainder of Ancient Eight play with a game against Yale on Sunday, Oct. 16.
