CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Sophomore goalkeeper
Meghan Kennedy made six saves in her first Ivy League start, and the women's soccer team played Ivy contender Harvard to a scoreless draw on Saturday afternoon at Jordan Field.
Neither team made much in the way of territorial progress until the 37th minute, when the first shot on goal of the day was off the foot of Harvard's Meg Tveit and easily handled by Kennedy. Junior
Tess Pullano had the Big Red's first shot on target from 25 yards in the 43rd minute.
The action picked up in the second half with the Crimson earning a corner kick in the first minute after the break and leading scorer Margaret Purce knocking a header wide on the ensuing play. Harvard (7-3-1, 2-0-1 Ivy League) then had a golden opportunity with a throughball finding Joan Fleischman alone in the box in the 59th minute, but her shot sailed over a charging Kennedy and well clear of the crossbar.
The Crimson came closest to scoring in the 74th minute when Purce's free kick from just inside 25 yards was pushed onto the crossbar by Kennedy, who then quickly got back to her feet to snare a rebound sent toward goal by Rachel Garcia.
Cornell (3-6-2, 0-2-1 Ivy League) then threatened a shade over two minutes later when freshman forward
Autumn Brown anticipated a pass across the back line, gained possession and entered the 18-yard box ahead of the pursuing defenders only to have Harvard goalkeeper Lizzie Durack steer her shot wide.
While the Big Red still has not defeated Harvard since 1993, it continues its recent history of being a thorn in the side of the perennial league contender.
In 2012,
Patrick Farmer's first season as head coach, the Big Red earned a 1-1 draw in Cambridge as part of a 1-14-1 season. In 2011, the teams played to a 2-2 final score in what proved to be Harvard's lone non-win of the Ivy League season.
The Big Red returns to action at 7 p.m. Monday with its non-league finale at Colgate.
