ITHACA, N.Y. — Dartmouth scored a goal minutes into the second half to take a 1-0 lead over the men's soccer team that would prove to be enough, as the Big Green handed the Big Red a one goal loss in the home finale on Saturday night at Berman Field.
The loss – Cornell's seventh one goal game of the season – moved the Big Red to 1-13-2 overall and 0-6-0 in Ancient Eight play while Dartmouth moved to 7-4-5 overall and 3-1-1 in league play.
Neither team was able to sustain offensive pressure in the first half of play. The first shot on goal, from freshman
George Pedlow, didn't come until the 17th minute of play.
After the scoreless first half, it took Dartmouth just under four minutes into the second half to find the back of the net. Matt Greer sent in a corner kick from the right side that Henry Baldwin was able to redirect with his head past freshman goalkeeper
Ryan Shellow.
Shellow kept it a one goal game with two big saves on shots from Greer. First, in the 54th minute, the freshman keeper dove to his right to keep out a hard, low shot from and then in the 88th minute he leapt in the air to get a glove on a rocket fired from 10 yards out and recovered to keep the rebound from crossing the goal line.
The Big Green's goal flicked on a switch in the Big Red and the team started playing out wide and overlapping runs and though Dartmouth did well to step in front of shots, the work of the Big Red wingers created space for offensive opportunities towards goal.
Pedlow and junior
Tommy Griffin each finished the game with three shot attempts while senior
Zach Bialik had two. It was Griffin that had a good look at goal with 90 seconds remaining in the game when freshman Cristophe Gerlach slotted a ball to him just outside the box but he pushed the shot wide.
Darmouth led the final shot on goal tally, 6-3. James Hickok finished with three saves for the Big Green while Shellow had six.
Cornell will play its final game of the season on the road against Columbia on Sunday at 1 p.m.
