ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red field hockey team celebrated Senior Day in dominant fashion, tying the school record for goals in a single game, as it routed Dartmouth, 9-1, this afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field. With the win, its fourth in a row over the Big Green, Cornell finishes the season on a four-game winning streak to post a 10-7 record overall and a mark of 4-3 in the Ivy League.
All three seniors scored for Cornell, led by
Katy Weeks' five-point afternoon (two goals, one assist), to finish her career ranked eighth in Big Red history with 62 career points.
Elizabeth Horak scored in the 22nd minute to stake Cornell a 3-0 lead, while
Luisa Schulte-Bockum registered the first goal of her career on a penalty stroke at the 44:57 mark to make it a 6-1 game.
"I'm so happy for these seniors," said head coach
Donna Hornibrook. "They've meant a lot to this program and their commitment has never wavered. It was great to see them all score. I was pleased that we had the opportunity to let Luisa take the stroke. She's been a really solid defender and has done some great things in the back, so the whole team was really fired up to see her score for the first time in her career."
Krysten Mayers matched Weeks for a game-high with two goals, while
Kjersti Anderson and
Gabby DePetro teamed up for a pair of goals by assisting on each other's tally. Anderson's goal was the first of the game, giving her the game-winner, while DePetro added a second assist on Cornell's final goal.
Sam McILwrick also scored once for the Big Red and
Isabel Josephs added an assist.
Cornell outshot the Big Green, 42-11 and had a 26-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Big Red also attempted 13 penalty corners, while holding the visitors to just four attempts.
"Overall, it was really a dominant offensive program," said Hornibrook. "I feel like we've really had it rolling for the past few weeks. The middle of the season was a struggle with some injuries, so I'm really pleased that we were able to salvage 10 wins this season."
In total, five goals came off penalty corners, including Dartmouth's lone tally off the stick of Joanne Nazareth.
Dartmouth (4-14, 0-7) was kept in the game by freshman goalie Emma Plumb, who made 13 saves, several of which were spectacular, but she allowed seven goals in a span of 51:07 before giving way to senior Paige Duffy who stopped three and allowed the final two goals. The Big Green also received a defensive save from Morgan Philie to finish with 17 saves on the day.
In her fourth career start,
Maddie Henry made five saves and allowed just one goal to finish the season with a record of 4-0.
