Squash Embarks On Busy Regular Season Finish

ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's and women's squash teams have an action-packed final weekend of the regular season on tap. The action starts on Friday, when both squads travel to Princeton for matches which will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network. The men's match begins at 3 p.m., while the women's tilt is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. at Jadwin Squash Courts in Princeton, N.J.

Following the matches against the Tigers, both squash teams will take on Franklin & Marshall on Saturday before returning to Belkin International Squash Courts on Sunday. The final day will serve as the Big Red's Senior Day, with both teams playing Penn and the men's team later tangling with Hobart.

The weekend is particularly noteworthy for the Cornell men (3-8, 1-4 Ivy League), which are looking to break a seven-match losing streak. Among those setbacks are a pair of 5-4 heartbreakers, including last Saturday's near upset of fifth-ranked Dartmouth. The Big Red was ranked 12th in the nation by the College Squash Association as of last week, with new rankings due out sometime this week. As it currently stands, Cornell will be taking on both programs on either side of it those rankings — No. 11 Franklin & Marshall and No. 13 Princeton.

Princeton (3-9, 1-4) won its first Ivy match and broke a seven-match skid Sunday with a 7-2 victory over visiting Brown. While the Tigers lead the all-time series, 47-4, the Big Red has secured two of those victories in memorable fashion over the last three years. Jordan Brail clinched a 5-4 upset victory last season with his win at the No. 7 spot. On Feb. 8, 2013, Princeton was undefeated and ranked No. 1 before suffering a 5-4 loss to Cornell.

The Big Red will continue to jockey for potential Hoehn Cup positioning the following day with its first visit to F&M since the 2012-13 season. The Diplomats are 6-7 entering their match Friday against George Washington. Cole Osborne has the same record from the No. 1 position and Kareem Mawla has a team-best seven victories from the Nos. 5-7 spots. Cornell holds a narrow 24-23 lead in the all-time series. Penn (9-3, 3-2) was tabbed second in the country entering last weekend, but it suffered a 6-3 loss to Yale which will probably move it down the rankings. Cornell is 20-39 all-time against Penn, having won eight straight on the series before an 8-1 loss last season. The Big Red then wraps up the regular season against 23rd-ranked Hobart (10-7).

On the women's side, Cornell (8-5, 2-3) continues to hold down eighth in the national rankings — which is good for the final berth in the Howe Cup, the top flight of the CSA national championships. Sophomores Margaux Losty and Emma Uible are tied for a team-high in victories with nine apiece, and senior co-captain Reut Odinak is 8-4.

In 23 all-time meetings, Cornell has never beaten Princeton (8-2, 3-2). The Tigers are currently ranked third in the country after recent over fellow Howe Cup contenders Stanford and Yale. Princeton's last loss was to No. 2 Penn, which Cornell has defeated just twice in 25 all-time meetings, with both of those occasions coming during the 2001-02 season. In between those Ivy matches is Saturday's match at Franklin & Marshall. The Diplomats (5-6) are ranked 14th in the country and winless in their last 10 matches against the Big Red.

In addition to Friday's matches at Princeton being streamed by ILDN, Saturday's matches for both the men and women will be streamed through Franklin & Marshall's website.
