Saturday's Highlights ITHACA, N.Y. — ECAC Hockey announced Tuesday that freshman forward
Anthony Angello has been named the league's Rookie of the Week after he scored two goals and added an assist Saturday in the men's hockey team's 3-3 tie with Rensselaer on Senior Night.
Angello, who leads the team with 11 goals and ranks second with 21 points, scored just 28 seconds into the game. After RPI tied the game in the second period, Angello restored the Big Red's lead just 32 seconds later. He then helped created classmate
Alec McCrea's goal midway through the third period for his second career three-point game. Angello also posted a two-goal, one-assist effort against Merrimack on Jan. 9, which led to his first league weekly rookie honor this season.
From nearby Manlius, N.Y., Angello's 11 goals are the most by a Cornell freshman since current NHLer Riley Nash scored 12 during the 2007-08 season. Only three freshmen have ever scored more than 11 goals in
Mike Schafer's 21-year tenure as the Jay R. Bloom '77 Head Coach of Men's Hockey — Nash, current NHLer Matt Moulson (13 in 2002-03) and Denis Ladoucer (14 in 1998-99).
This is the Big Red's third ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week honor this season. Angello has won two, and the first of the season belonged to McCrea (Dec. 8) — who also a had a three-point effort against the Engineers on Saturday.
Cornell (13-9-7, 8-8-6 ECAC Hockey), which is ranked 18th in the USCHO.com national poll, starts the postseason this weekend by a hosting a best-of-three series in the first round of the ECAC Hockey Championships at Lynah Rink. The Big Red is seeded eighth and taking on ninth-seeded Union (13-12-9, 6-10-6), starting with Game 1 at 7 p.m. Friday.
