POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Cornell softball team dropped a doubleheader to Marist on Wednesday afternoon at Gartland Field, falling 10-2 in five innings in game one before losing a 5-1 contest in game two. The Red Foxes improved to 19-7 with the sweep, while the Big Red slipped to 3-13.
Game OneMarist collected 14 hits and used a six-run fourth inning for a 10-2, five-inning victory in the opening contest.
Cornell scored a run in the first on a lead-off single by
Emily Weinberg, who was 3-for-3 in the contest. Weinberg came around and scored on a sacrifice and an error. Marist struck back with one in the bottom of the first to tie it up and two in the second to take the lead. The Big Red got within 3-2 in the fourth after
Leanne Iannucci doubled to right-center and pinch-runner
Ivey Wagner came around on a single and a passed ball. Marist took control with a six-run fourth and ended the game after five innings with a single run.
Marist baserunners stole five bases and took advantage of four wild pitches, overshadowing Weinberg's three hits and a pair by both Iannucci and
Meg Parker.
Game TwoMeg Parker slammed her team-leading fourth home run of the season, but it was one of just two hits in the nightcap for the Big Red in a 5-1 loss to the Red Foxes. Iannucci also had a hit, giving both three on the day.
Three Marist pitchers combined on the two-hitter, while
Maddie Orcutt went the distance in the circle for the Big Red, surrendering all 10 hits and five runs in taking the loss.
Claire Oberdorf was 4-for-4 with three doubles and a triple to lead the Marist offense, scoring two runs and driving in two in the win. She also stole one of four bases for the home team.
The Big Red opens Ivy League play on Friday, April 1 when Harvard visits Niemand*Robison Field at 2 p.m. in the home opener.
