Penn Takes Two From Softball On Saturday

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Penn softball used a dominant pitching effort in game one and timely hitting in the nightcap to sweep a Saturday afternoon doubleheader against Cornell at Penn Park, taking the contests 6-0 and 14-6 in five innings. The Quakers evened their record at 19-19 (5-9 Ivy), while the Big Red slipped to 8-26 (3-11 Ivy).

Game 1
Alexis Sargent tossed a three-hit shutout with five strikeouts and Cornell never threatened after having runners on first and second with one out in the top of the first in a 6-0 Quaker win.

The Big Red never got another runner in scoring position after the first, and Sargent allowed just two hits the rest of the way to improve to 10-7 on the year.

After two and a half scoreless innings, Penn broke through with two runs in the third - taking advantage of a pair of Big Red errors - and four insurance runs in the fourth as part of a six-hit inning. All told, Penn pounded out 10 hits in the contest with four hitters collecting two hits apiece.

Kim Dolhon, Leanne Iannucci and Emily Weinberg each had a single for the Big Red.

Game 2
A four-run first inning put Cornell into the lead, but it would be short-lived as the Quakers scored early in often in the five-inning victory to complete the Saturday sweep. A 10-run second inning propelled the home team to the win.

In between, it was all Quakers. Penn scored 10 in the second on six hits and three Big Red errors, with Lauren Li hitting a three-run homer and Jurie Joyner clearing the bases with a grand slam.

Jessica Bigbie, KIm Dolhon and Leanne Iannucci each had two hits, with Dolhon, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year, hitting a three-run homer in the first. Rebecca Kubena's RBI single got the Big Red on the board to open things up.

Cornell scored two more in the third to cap the scoring, plating runs on an RBI groundout by Kubena and a run-scoring double by Dolhon.
